In the rest of this handout, we will look at postmodernism in the second and third senses of the words. I will do this by tracing out some themes that help to circumscribe the field of postmodernism, both within the realm of ideas and in the realm of the arts. Postmodernism, like modernism, follows most of these same ideas, rejecting boundaries between high and low forms of art, rejecting rigid genre distinctions, emphasizing pastiche, parody, bricolage, irony, and playfulness.
